Pierre Larousse , born the October 23rd 1817 with Toucy in the Yonne, dead the January 3rd 1875 with Paris, it was devoted to research like Pédagogue, Encyclopédiste and editor French. He is especially known for the dictionaries which bear its name, of which Petit Larousse .

Biography

Born in the small town from Toucy in the Yonne into 1817 of a father cartwright-blacksmith and a mother cabaretière, he is a brilliant pupil already eager to become encyclopedist like Diderot and obtains at 16 years a purse of the university to supplement his formation in Versailles. Of return to Toucy, it becomes, at 20 years hardly, teacher at the higher elementary school. During three years he seeks to renew pedagogy by calling upon the curiosity of the children before joining Paris in 1840.

During 8 years, it follows the free courses of the Sorbonne, studies with the Conservatoire arts and trades, with the national Muséum of natural history and with the Collège de France and frequent of large libraries. He studies Latin, the Greek, linguistics, the Sanskrit, Chinese, the literatures foreign Frenchwoman and, the history, philosophy, mechanics and astronomy.

He founds in 1850 a publisher with Augustin Boyer, the Librairie Larousse, which develops quickly. It is on March 1st 1852 which Pierre Larousse asks officially a patent of publisher-bookseller. October 23rd, 1852, it receives the authorization to exert.

Today, the patronym of Larousse became a common noun and the activity took a considerable rise since the first steps at the time of the installation in Paris, street Pierre-Sarrazin then street Saint-Andre-of-Arts.

In 1852, Pierre Athanase Larousse has behind him several years of keen work. In 1838 and until 1840, he is initially teacher in Yonne where he was born in 1817.

Its objective is of any knowledge in all the fields. Its other wish is also to prepare the edition of school handbooks intended for the elementary schools. The Révolution of 1848 stops its projects.

Larousse is now repeater in a Parisian institution, acquires a property with Toucy where its secret desire of Burgundian attache to the ground is to cultivate the vine. The Lexicologie of the elementary schools appears in 1849. In 1852, a new edition is published under the lexicological title elementary Grammaire . It is the first stone of a monumental building in gestation.

In 1856, is published the Nouveau Dictionary of the French language , the ancestor of the Petit Larousse . He is condemned by the Church and put at the Index of the Books Prohibited by the Holy Office of the Roman Enquiry.

Its major work was the Grand universal Dictionary of the XIX {{E}} century . Initially published in booklets between 1864 and 1866, it gathers them in 17 volumes of 1866 to 1876 and spent eleven years (until its death) to write this dictionary of 22.700 pages.

Pierre Larousse dies out in Paris in 1875, the year of the foundation of the Société Larousse. He is buried with the Cimetière Montparnasse (the 14th division).
