Pierre Ier of Portugal

Pierre Ier of Portugal , known as Pierre the Dispenser of justice (in Portuguese Pedro O Justiceiro ), born the April 8th 1320 with Coimbra, dead the January 18th 1367 with Estremoz, was the eighth king de Portugal, of 1357 with 1367.

It was wire of Alphonse IV (1291-1357), known as Alphonse the Brave man , king de Portugal (1325-1357) and of Béatrice de Castille (1293-1359).

Pierre is known for his relationship with Inês of Castro, the lady's companion of his Constance wife, which strongly influenced the internal policy of Portugal during the reign of Alphonse IV. Inês ends up being assassinated, says one, by order of the king in 1355 but that did not improve the relationship between father and wire. On the contrary, between 1355 and its access to the crown, Pierre revolted against his father at least twice and to him forever forgiven the assassination of Inês.

After its crowning in 1357, Pierre announced that he had married with Inês little before his death and that it wished that one regard it as queen of Portugal. This marriage is proven by no document.

Two of the assassins of Inês were taken and carried out with a great brutality. The tradition also says that Pierre would have exhumed the corpse of Inês, would have crowned it like queen of Portugal and would have obliged the nobility to make him the hand-kissing. Then, it made build two tombs in the side aisles of the Monastère of Alcobaça so that, the day of the final judgment, the eternal lovers, ressuscities, can be seen immediately.

As king, Pierre was a good administrator, courageous in the defense of his country against the influence of the pope and defending the least favoured. In external policy, it took part with Aragon in the invasion of Castille.
