Pierre Ier of Cyprus

Pierre Ier of Lusignan , born the October 9th 1328, assassinated the January 17th 1369, king de Chypre (1358 - 1369), wire of Hugues IV of Cyprus and Alice d' Ibelin.

Young person it accepted the title of count de Tripoli , title completely stripped of substance because Tripoli was conquered by the Mamelukes since close to a half century. In 1342, it married Echive de Montfort, girl and heiress of Onfroy de Montfort, constable of Cyprus and titular lord of Tyr and Strand. Echive died before 1350 when Pierre was still adolescent and the marriage was without child. In 1353, it married Eléonore d' Aragon, girl of infant Pierre d' Aragon, count de Ribagorce, and of Jeanne de Foix, and sister of Alphonse d' Aragon duke of Gandie and claiming with the throne of Aragon.

Jeanne Aleman was a long time her mistress.

His/her father refreina his desire to carry out a new crusade and to take again Jerusalem, but as of the death of this last, Pierre set up his projects. He went to Europe to obtain troops and the October 11th 1365, he led a force of Cypriot and Westerners in Crusade and took Alexandria. However, the European knights refused to follow it to the attack of Cairo, and it was obliged to go back to Cyprus; and the only result of this company was the inimitable one of the Sultan of Egypt. Economic reprisals were engaged against the Christian merchants in Egypt and Syria, and the pope Urbain V advised in Pierre to make peace with the sultan, after having tried in vain to obtain reinforcements of the European monarchs. He unloaded close to Tripoli but if he made spoils, he did not obtain any territorial profit. He tried to again obtain troops in Europe, but without success. Urbain V again advised to him to make peace with the sultan, and Pierre was obliged to join to the pope and Venice to sign a treaty with Egypt.

He returned in a kingdom of Cyprus shaken by the intrigues and the plots. He was assassinated by a faction of noble the November 17th 1369. He had founded in 1347 the Order of the Swan, an order of knighthood charged to reconquer Jerusalem.

  • Pierre II (1357 † 1382)
  • Marguerite (1360 † 1397), promised in marriage to Charles Visconti, married to his first cousin Jacques de Lusignan († 1396) count de Tripoli
  • Echive, died young before 1369
