Pierre II of Médicis
Pierre II of Médicis (Florence February 15th 1471 - December 28th 1503), wire junior by Laurent de Médicis (known as the Splendid one) and by Clarisse Orsini, brother of the pope Leon X, known as “Pierre the unfortunate one” is often depicts like a poor, arrogant and undisciplined sovereign. He was married with Alfonsina Orsini.
He became Master of Florence with died of his father in 1492. A little later in 1494, Charles VIII entered to Italy with strong troops to go to Naples of which he asserted the throne. It had been strongly encouraged there by Ludovic More, former regent of Milan which wished to become duke in the place of his nephew Gian-Galeazzo Sforza and had thus pushed with the release of a war between the king of France and that of Naples, father-in-law of Gian-Galeazzo. Following his passage by Milan, Charles moving towards Naples had to cross the Toscane after having left troops in Lombardy to make safe his lines of communication. Pierre tried to remain neutral, but this appeared unacceptable to king de France who invades Tuscany. Pierre then tried to resist, but did not accept much support of Florence which was subjected to the influence of Savonarole, preacher of the Dominican convent of San Marco. His/her own cousins gave up it to join the rows of the French.
Pierre thus ceased any opposition while the army of Charles approached Florence and it granted to king de France all that it claimed, without trying to negotiate of better conditions. Fury that in Florence these concessions considered generated humiliating led the Médicis to flee, following what their palate was plundered. The republic of Florence was restored as well on the bottom as on the form and Médicis were officially exiled, condemned to wander between the various Italian and European States. Pierre II flees first of all with Venice where it was accommodated thanks to the intervention of Philippe de Commines.
A few years later, in 1503, whereas French and Spaniards continued to fight in Italy for the Royaume of Naples, Pierre drowned whereas it tried to flee at the conclusion of a battle which the French (to which it was allied) had lost. -----
