Pierre Huyssens (February 22nd 1577, Bruges (Belgium) - June 6th 1637, Bruges) was a brother Jesuit, architect of profession, recognized like the Master of the Baroque in the Netherlands.
Architect Baroque
Pierre Huyssens was already master mason when it entered the
Society of Jesus in 1697 (with Tournai). Of mason he became architect while collaborating initially in the construction of the church of the college of Maestricht (1606). Called with
Antwerp in 1613 it drew the plans of the church St Ignace (now St Charles Borromée) under the direction of
François d' Aguilon. With died of this last (1617) Pierre Huyssens became the project superintendent and then gave about it all its measurement like (probably) the best architect baroque of the Netherlands of the time. Collaborating with Pierre-Paul Rubens which decorated the church St Ignace with his famous paintings, it made to this church a chief of work. After one last year with
Rome (1626-27) it returned in
Belgium where it built the church St François-Xavier (now St Walburge) in Bruges. Then they were the plans of the church of the college of
Namur (now St Wolf), a small jewel of the Belgian baroque. Construction was finished by it only in 1641. In 1628 it drew the plans of the church of the abbey St Pierre, with
Ghent. In the majority of the cases, the construction of such buildings taking of many years, the brother-architect did not see completion of it.
He died in Bruges on June 6th, 1637.
Pierre Huyssens is certainly the great architect Jesuit of the religious baroque of the catholic Netherlands.
