Pierre Houcmant

Pierre Houcmant Photographer inhabitant of Li2ege.

Born in 1953 in Pépinster (Belgium), Pierre Houcmant is quickly confronted with the universe of photography. His/her father, initially teacher, become professor of photography. Very young person, it divides into sheets the cialized reviews spé, with an private interest for the Swiss review Camera.

This maga zine makes him discover the work of former photographers, like Atget, Julia Margaret Cameron, Josef 5udek, the iconography of Bauhaus, as well as work of its contemporaries. In same time, he learns how to handle Brownie of Kodak and car by contact, photographing all, in a spirit which is not without making think of the exclamation of Renger Patzsch: “The world is beautiful! ” At nineteen years, it is registered at the institute of higher learning of the Art schools Saint-Luc of Liege, where it follows the courses of the photographer Hubert Grooteclaes until 1974.

Commercial photography hardly allures it. Only, phie will photogra it creative attracts it. Exploring disadvantaged social environments, it approaches the report and testifies quickly to an interest for the portrait. Sensitive to poé sy which emanates from the work of the Czech Josef Sudek, known for its photo panoramic C-Ws communication of gardens and landscapes, it tests with the practice of the apparatus large size.

At the time of a voyage to Prague, it meets Jan Saudek, with which it binds friendship. It turns over regularly to Czechoslovakia and visit the Bohemian one, of which it photographs the great landscapes.

Occupied by a series which it named Interversions, it exposes much abroad. However, the frequentation of plastics technicians influenced by Marcel Duchamp makes rock her interests towards achievements where the concept takes precedence over the emotion.

After a stay in India, it decides to be established in Amsterdam, where it obtains a workshop in Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten. There there remain three years and carry out, inter alia, a performance entitled Dialog of Moulds, which denounces a situation of art, as well as the influence of the media on the perception of a given event.

In 1989, it is established in Antwerpen, without being able to carry out contact with the artistic medium of the city, and regains Liege later one year. In the beginning of the year ninety, it is interested in the image of the body which it splits up. In parallel, it carries out a series of portraits of writers and prepares, currently, a work in which they will be associated with reproductions of original manuscripts. Its title: Faces of the writing.
