Pierre Grimal

Pierre Grimal , born with Paris the November 21st 1912, died with Paris the October 11th 1996, is a historian and a Latin French ist. Impassioned Roman civilization, it made much for the promotion of the cultural heritage of the ancient Rome, as well near the specialists as in the general public.

Biography

Admitted with the National university in 1933, received third with the aggregation of letters in 1935, he was member of the French École of Rome (1935-1937) then exerted as Latin teacher with the college of Rennes, then as professor of Roman civilization to faculties of Caen, Bordeaux, and finally with the Sorbonne during thirty years.

It published studies on the Roman civilization, of which many volumes with the editions Which I know, translations of Latin classic authors (Cicéron, Sénèque the Young person, Tacite, Plaute, Terence). In the retirement, it published also fictionalized biographies and historical fictions ( Mémoires of Agrippine , the lawsuit Néron ), more intended for the general public.

At the end of its life, it militated for the safeguard of the literary lesson.
