Pierre Gaxotte (January 29th 1895 with Revigny-on-Ornain - November 21st 1982 with Paris) is a Historien and Journaliste French.
Biographical elements
Raise with the National university in 1917, it is received first with the Agrégation of history in 1920. It is introduced into the intellectual mediums by the editor Arthème Fayard, who entrusts to him the direction of the newspaper Candide , then that of I am everywhere. It contributes regularly to the French Action , of Charles Maurras.Gaxotte wrote many works of Histoire which marked their time and which knew several editions (in particular those published before the Second War: the French revolution (1928); the Century of Louis XV (1933) and Frederic II (1938). In parallel, Pierre Gaxotte continues until 1939 a career of Journaliste in the press of Extrême right-hand side, writing for example in Candide of April 7th, 1938, in connection with Leon Blum: “It incarnates all that counterirritates us blood and the goose flesh gives us. He is the evil, he is death. ”
If it is not hostile with the sympathy which express his/her colleagues of I am everywhere for the Fascisme, it moves away from there gradually and it is replaced with the drafting as a chief by Robert Brasillach in 1937; as from January 1939, it ceases signing leading articles for this newspaper.
According to Jules Roy, during the summer 1940, it tries, in vain, to persuade Maurras to suspend the publication of the daily newspaper the French Action because it provides that the USA will enter in war against Reich the following year and that one should not bind the destiny of the monarchical movement to Germany which will be overcome.
Under the Occupation, Gaxotte supports the Maréchal Pétain, but challenges the Collaborationnisme I am everywhere. After the Release, it gives up its political militancy and becomes leader-writer with the Figaro . Consequently, it is devoted primarily to the drafting of historical work - but lance also its own review of inspiration Maurassienne, the French Nation . He is elected with the French Academy in 1953.
