Pierre Fourier

Saint Pierre Fourier , born with Mirecourt the November 30th 1565 and died in Gray the December 9th 1640, is a monk Lorraine Catholique . He was béatifié in 1730 and canonized in 1847. He is celebrated by the catholics the December 9th.

Religious life

Wire of a clothier, it made theological studies at the university of Pont-à-Mousson at the Jésuites during six years. It joined then the regular Chanoine S of Saint-Augustin to the Abbaye of Chaumousey beside Épinal. This religious order had fallen into a certain laxism and one will entrust the reform in of it to him 1623. He will become about it the superior for the Duché of Lorraine in 1632.

Priest of Mattaincourt

It became in 1595, at 30 years, the priest of Mattaincourt, commune in which resided of many Protestants. Historiography retains of him a great piety and a great devotion to the poor. It creates a mutual case: the purse Saint-Evre to avoid with its parishioners having to borrow money from the usurers.

It creates with the romarimontaine Alix the Clerk, the Congrégation Notre-Dame (called sometimes also the congregation Saint-Augustin) which intends for free education girls. The first school will open not far from Mattaincourt, with Poussay, in 1598.

The exile

Whereas Louis XIII tries to annex the Duché of Lorraine, its fidelity with its legitimate sovereign, the duke of Lorraine and Bar Charles IV, is worth to him to be exiled in 1636 by Richelieu with Gray, then Spanish possession. It will die there four years later at the 75 years age.
