Pierre Courtin

Pierre Courtin is a painter and engraver French born the January 20th 1921 with Rebréchien (Loiret), forest village close to Orleans.

Biography

In 1939 Courtin takes lessons of engraving at the Regional School of the Art schools of Orleans. It devotes most of its time to agricultural work or of bûcheronnage. Come in Paris in 1942, he is pupil of Pénat to the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the Art schools then works in 1943 with the Académie Julian or at André Lhote. He undertakes various works for Jacques Villon which he continues to see until in 1951. In 1944 it attends the Académie Ranson where it has Francis Gruber for corrector. It becomes acquainted with César Domela, Herbin, Magnelli, Pevsner, Poliakoff and other painters abstracted, as well as critic Charles Estienne.

In 1947 Pierre Courtin works as working printer in Taille-douce at Georges Leblanc where it remains until in 1951. Disciple of Charles Sapoulin, it draws engravings from Villon and Roger Vieillard. He exposes to the Salon of New Realities and in 1948 with the Biennale de Venise. In 1949 Courtin creates with Gerard Vulliamy, Ubac, Chastel and some others, the group “C-Ws communication”. It takes part in the International exhibition of Engraving to the Petit Palais. It becomes in 1950 member of the Management Committee of the Salon of May and until in 1969 remains it.

Pierre Courtin present in 1951 its book Six poems of Nicolas Beauduin at Colette Allendy whom he has known for four years, at which he meets Hartung, Schoffer, Soulages, Schneider, Doucet, Wols, Bryen, Atlan, Picabia, Deyrolle. It buys a press, leaves Paris to settle in suburbs. In 1952 it carries out about thirty engravings for a fragment of poem of Éluard and decides with Charles Estienne, Lapicque, Néjad, Degottex, Rene Duvillier, Istrati to create a Living room of October, in reaction against the Living room of May.

In 1953 Courtin takes part in Biennial of São Paulo, present in 1957 a personal exposure to the gallery Jeanne Bucher. It meets Heinz Berggruen with which it remains in contact until in 1969. In 1959 Courtin takes part in Documenta II with Kassel and carries out a personal exposure at Berggruen. In 1960 it receives the Bright Price in XXXe Biennale de Venise and exposes to the gallery John Lefevre with New York.

In the Années 1960 Courtin exposes in particular to the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam (1964), to the Museum of Ulm and the Saidenberg Gallery of New York (1966), with Arts Club of Chicago (1967). In 1971 the Benador gallery of Geneva presents its paintings, gouaches and engravings and Courtin receives the national Grand Prix of arts. Important exposures of its work take place in Paris thereafter, with the gallery the Top ( 25 years of engraving , 1972), with the Museum-Castle of Annecy, Montbeliard and the museum of Worpswede, in Germany and in various towns of France (1973). With this occasion is presented the engraved catalog of its work. In 1989 it exposes to the Gallery Claude Bernard of Paris (oils and gouaches) and to the Claude Bernard Gallery of New York.

Of 1974 with 1981, it builds several paperboards of tapestry, including one of 110 square meters for the International office of Work to Geneva.
