Pierre Chantraine is a linguist French born in 1899 and died in 1974. He was pupil of Antoine Meillet, Joseph Vendryes and Paul Mazon, to only quote most famous, and was undoubtedly one of the largest specialists in the Greek language. He worked moreover regularly as relector for the Collection of the Universités of France, taught a long time with the Sorbonne and EPHE, and appeared among the first scientists French to be been interested in the mycénien, as soon as Michel Lejeune had convinced it of the validity of the deciphering of Chadwick and Ventris, in 1954.
