Pierre Cacault

Pierre Cacault , painter French, born in 1744 with Nantes and deceased in 1810 with Nantes.

Presentation

Younger brother of François, Pierre Cacault carries on an activity of painter to the family faience manufacture and takes part in the management of the firm before beginning with Paris studies of painting. In 1774, stock-broker of the town of Nantes, it leaves to Rome where, raises of Vien, it is initiated with the painting of history.

During nearly twenty years, it carries on an activity of painter there, attending many artists among whom Mathurin and Louis Crucy, Coste, David, Canova and Lemot. As of 1780, the town of Nantes requests it, without success, for the functions of architect-voyer, but in fact the riots anti-Frenchwomen of 1793 cause its departure of Rome and its return in its birthplace.

As of 1796, Pierre Cacault acquires of smallholdings with Clisson and in the area. It settles in the old presbytery of the Madeleine in 1798. In the absence of his brother, retained in Italy until in 1803, it takes in heart to supervise the construction of the buildings of the museum-school which is completed in 1804, of a picturesque architectural style inspired of Italy. The presentation of the collection Cacault is transitory there. As of 1805, with died of his/her brother, Pierre Cacault tries, in vain, to negotiate the repurchase, by the Government, of the museum and its collections, of which it wishes to entrust the direction to François-Frederic Lemot. January 27th 1810, Bertrand-Geslin, mayor of Nantes, buys the collection for the city. Two days later, Pierre Cacault dies.
