Pierre Buyoya born the November 24th 1949 is a politician and military Burundian. He was twice with the head of the country, of 1987 with 1993 then of 1996 with 2003.

Political career

Buyoya arrived at the capacity in 1987 following a coup d'etat against Jean-Baptiste Bagaza and founded the Third Republic. He affirmed to want to carry out liberalizations and to improve the relations between Hutu Tutsi and but its mode quickly proved to be an oppressive junta military tutsi, which leads in August 1988 to a rising of the Hutu population which caused the death of 20.000 people. Buyoya then charged a commission with mediation with finding a solution to put a term at violence.

Democratic interlude

The commission wrote a new constitution, approved by Buyoya in 1992. The new text envisaged the installation of a nonethnic government, with a President and a Parliament. Democratic elections took place in 1993, and carried Melchior Ndadaye left the Face for the democracy Burundi FRODEBU , an Hutu, with the capacity. This last named a government made up as well of representatives of the two ethnos groups, thus it named Sylvie Kinigi, Tusti like Prime Minister with for mission of reconciling the two ethnos groups in order to build an economic true policy. The party of Pierre Buyoya was the Union for national progress, UPRONA

Civil war

In the night of the October 21st 1993, parachutists girdled the presidential palace, president Ndadaye and six of its minister were assassinated by the army. Burundi replongea in the civil war, which made nearly 150.000 victims. Sylvie Kinigi had, in fact, to take up the duties of Head of the State of the October 27th 1993 with the February 5th 1994.

A new president of Burundi Cyprien Ntaryamira arrived at the capacity for just two months, of February 5th to the April 6th 1994 to perish in the attack on the plane of the Rwandan president Juvénal Habyarimana. A coalition government was founded with Sylvestre Ntibantunganya but was in the incapacity to bring back peace.

The July 25th 1996, Buyoya reversed Ntibantunganya and took again the capacity. The civil war continued in an attenuated way. The international community imposed economic sanctions after the return to the capacity of Buyoya, which were raised after the creation of an pluri-ethnic government, with Domitien Ndayizeye, an Hutu, as Vice-président.

In accordance with the governmental agreement, Buyoya gave the capacity to Ndayizeye the April 30th 2003.

Responsibilities for Buyoya

Pierre Buyoya is suspected of being responsible for the assassination of Ndadaye Nickel silver, and his ministers the October 21st 1993.

In December 2006, the South-African catholic newspaper " The Southern Cross" Buyoya puts causes some in the assassination " planned of in haut" of Mgr Michael Courtney, Apostolic nuncio in Burundi on December 29th 2003.
