Pierre Boutang , born the September 20th 1916 with Saint-Etienne and deceased the June 27th 1998 with Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer, was a Philosophe, Poète, Journaliste Politique and Traducteur French.

Biographical elements

Normalien, aggregate of philosophy in 1936, it takes part the same year in the drafting of l' French Action and appears like a fervent supporter of the ideas of Maurras. Having taken part in the government Giraud in Africa of North in 1943, and though it took part in the army of the Libération (in Tunisia and with the Morocco, until 1946), it will be revoked without pension and with prohibition to teach after the war. Since then, it will be devoted, in particular with the Journalisme, collaborating in Aspects of France and in the Bulletin of Paris , where, under pseudonym, it ensures the theatrical chronicle.

Seeking to renovate the Royalism, to articulate the message with Christianity of it, it founds with his friend Michel Vivier the weekly magazine the French Nation in 1955, where in particular the Hussards sign, but also Marcel Aymé, Gustave Thibon, Armand Robin, etc It wants to be “to be safe from Sartre” and the “contractors in nihilism”. In turn, and according to the events, it will support the de Gaulle General or will fight it, while insisting in particular on the monarchical model on which, according to him, the Constitution of Ve République rests. Following various interventions, in particular of Edmond Michelet and Alain Peyrefitte, Boutang is reinstated in teaching by the Général de Gaulle in 1967. He is initially professor of philosophy to the Lycée Turgot, then becomes university lecturer with the Université of Brest in 1974. In spite of a cabal about which all the press spoke, and where Boutang will receive the discrete support of François Mitterrand and that of Madeleine Rebérioux, it is named professor of metaphysics to the Sorbonne, where it teaches until 1984, then prolonging its seminar in its residence of Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer until the end. He died on June 27th, 1998.

Philosophy, royalism and critical literary

Boutang is often known like continuator of Maurras: it is it partially, while rejecting as of 1955 whole Antisémitisme, even “of State”, and by articulating the thought of the Monarchie with philosophy or the Christian Théologie. Actually, the blossoming of the Boutang philosopher parallel to proceeded its political and journalistic adventure (1936-1967), whereas its philosophical texts belong to the years 1970-1995. Its Cahiers (new - 1946-1997) testifies to this constancy of the concern Métaphysique.

In the Political considered as a concern (1948), its step borrows from the Phénoménologie while finding a tone very personal, where Boutang offers very new readings of Shakespeare, Kafka or Dostoïevski, which is used to him to question the gasoline of the policy. Inhabited by the questioning on the Logos, Boutang questioned the work of the translation ( Poetic Art , 1987, where it translates in particular a ten-line stanza of Maurice Scève into English). It brought an investigation extremely excavated into the bases Manicheans of the thought and the Art of William Blake ( William Blake, Manichean and visionary , 1991), poet whom it translated and from which it drew an anthology (at “Orphée”, the Difference). Boutang also translated and abundantly commented on the Banquet of Plato (at Hermann, 1989, with engravings of Vieira Da Silva).

Its literary criticism was collected in the Bees of Delphes (1954, republished in 1999) and the Crowned Source (2003) - One will not forget his Commentaires on 49 ten-line stanzas of Délie , published at Gallimard in 1953. In a highly poetic language, with an intelligence of a remarkable flexibility, Boutang does not hesitate to renew the reading of the more great classics (like Cervantès), to venture over territories still little explored by the French critics (T.S. Eliot), and one can also count it among the discoverers of Faulkner, whose its novels receive the influence.

Its Maurras, the destiny and work (1984) constitutes a comment extremely developed on a dedicated author with the gémonies, but of which it distinguished the poetic richness, the spiritual layout, the implications metaphysics, and fundamental political contours. Immense dialog, therefore, inside whose Boutang is far from always giving reason to its Master, even if intellectual love (socratic?) that it him door is obvious. In Metaphysical, field where its contribution is most decisive, Boutang is before a whole investigator to be it, in the wake of Gabriel Marcel, and dialogs about it, in particular with Heidegger, and Plato whose reading of the Parménide is one of most powerful.

Its Ontology of the secrecy (thesis supported in Sorbonne in 1972), account according to Steiner among the largest philosophical texts of the century. It is necessary to approach it Apocalypse of the desire (1979), which contains in particular a refutation of metaphysics Sophistique of Deleuze and Derrida, to reaffirm the transcendent dynamics of the desire, carried to the blood of the Paschal lamb.

Style and last works

In an original language, poetic, at the edge of the Hermetism, Boutang questions the being, the desire, time, the origination of the language, thanks to a considerable culture: familiar of the Greeks (Plato, Aristote), of scholastic (Boèce, Saint- Thomas d' Aquin), of the old and modern literature (of Dante and Shakespeare to Hölderlin, Rimbaud, Dostoïevsky, of which it prefaced Had the ), Boutang finds through the comment the movement even of their thought and their creative gesture, where the disclosure of the evil and the error does not take pleasure in a simple moral judgment.

Regarded as a Master by Emmanuel Lévinas, early noticed by Vladimir Jankélévitch, interlocutor and friend of George Steiner ( Dialogs on Abraham and Antigone, published in 1989), Pierre Boutang thus occupied a place with the junction of philosophy, the policy, theology, journalism and the literature. Its work and its thought remain to be redécouvrir.
