Pierre Bourque , C.Q, O.C (May 29th, 1942 with Montreal -) is a politician Québécois. He was the 40e mayor of Montreal of 1994 with 2001.

Biography

He is the second child of a family of eight. Married, then separate, he is the father of two children of Ecuadorian origin (Enrique and Ana-Lucia) which he adopted whereas they are in low age. He holds his passion for the flowers of his mother, for whom he always had a very great attachment. Its interest for the municipal policy comes however from his/her father (Benoit), who was director of the Service of the fires of Laval and which also was city council man in Montreal, under the administration of the mayor Jean Drapeau. Young person, Pierre Bourque practiced several sports and generally excelled there. At 14 years, it entered as a student at the Jésuites.

After studies in Belgium, where it obtained a diploma of Engineer in Horticulture, it began its career with the service of the Ville of Montreal in 1965, as coordinator of the installation and maintenance work of the World Fair of 1967. Being the only graduate Québécois horticultural engineer, it was found, at the 23 years age, the head of a team of 700 people which had the role of flowering Ground of the Men. Its career at the Town of Montreal finally led it to take the direction of the Botanical garden of Montreal, to which it insufflated a new energy. It occupied this function when it carried out its more great projects which are the international Floralies of Montreal (1980), the Biodôme and the Insectarium.

Political life

As of the Years 1970, Pierre Bourque flirta with the policy whereas it implied within the Québécois Parti. He was then president of the executive of the district of the Assumption.

In 1994, following its career of senior official and in reaction to the stagnation which it charged to the administration of Jean Doré and of the Rassemblement of the citizens of Montreal (RCM), it founded the Parti Vision Montreal. Pierre Bourque was elected as 40e mayor of the Ville of Montreal on November 6th, 1994. He was re-elected for a second mandate on November 1st, 1998 and remained in station until December 31st, 2001.

At the time of these two mandates, it was especially made know for its environmental achievements such as the revival of the project of reopening of the Canal of Lachine, the installation of the Éco-centers (sites of recovery) and of the Éco-districts (selective collection) and the operational startup of the program Montreal Bleu (inland waterways). Economic development, with the revitalization of the Street Holy-Catherine and the starting of the City of Multi-media, are also to put at its assessment.

Its constant desire to recall to Montréalais how the city was flowered and clean at the time of its passage to the town hall in fact sometimes the object of mocking remarks. It was the object of many Caricature S of Serge Chapleau, of the newspaper the Press , which called it Géranium First . One reproaches him his style of management, all to want to control and to miss transparency.

Finally, the great project of Pierre Bourque was the installation d'" An island, a ville" , the fusion of all the municipalities of the Island of Montreal, project imagined and desired by several, but never really tried. By its perspicacity and its eagerness near the Government of Quebec, he managed to carry out this a long time inaccessible project. That cost him however its post of mayor, defeat ascribable to the vote of protest of the " new Montréalais" , former citizens of the suburbs now amalgamated at the Town of Montreal. He then became chief of the official opposition to the Town hall of Montreal, posts that he occupied with difficulty, not being very justified by the reactive role of a chief of the opposition.

Its faintness opposite its functions of chief of the opposition and its reading of the Québécois political evolution led it to stand as a candidate to the provincial elections of 2003 for the democratic Action of Quebec, in the district montréalaise of Le Bourget. It lost however this election and decided to take again its functions of chief of the opposition to the town hall of Montreal.

Its adventure on the provincial scene involved however an important undertow near its partisans and near the citizens montréalais. Its return thus did not give any result and it undergoes one second consecutive defeat vis-a-vis Gerald Tremblay.

May 4th, 2006, he announced that he left the policy definitively. Large traveller since always, it wove very many bonds with the foreigner, in particular with the China. The observers are intended to envisage a new career, probably abroad to him.
