Pierre Bettencourt

Pierre Bettencourt (1917-2006) is a painter, Poète, Voyageur and writer French.

Born in 1917, it publishes its first texts on its own press, in the family home occupied by the Germans. Throughout its life, in addition to its works, it will publish also Antonin Artaud, Francis Ponge, Henri Michaux, Jean Dubuffet… It is deceased on April 13rd, 2006.

Writer and plastics technician of reputation, it was born in 1917 in Seine-Maritime, with Saint-Maurice-with Ételan. After secondary studies with the Harbor and in Savoy, it followed to the Collège de France the course of poetic of Paul Valéry.

It is starting from 1941 qu ' it was devoted to the Typographie, publishing in Saint-Maurice-in Ételan, on its own press with arm, its first books with the Colophon S often singular, poetic or sarcastic, but also of the new texts of Henri Michaux ( You will be father ), of Antonin Artaud ( the Theater of Seraph ), of his/her friend Jean Dubuffet ( Plukifekler …), of Francis Ponge ( the Roller ), etc

In 1953, after a stay with Chaillol with Dubuffet, it composed its first high reliefs where intervene, on painted funds, nonconventional materials (slate fragments, coffee beans, egg shells…) who give to the figures their singular texture and their worrying thickness. Primarily erotic, these high reliefs arose from the field of rough art. They express the character mysterious and crowned life at the same time as they reveal with innocent crudeness the phantasms of the artist.

Pierre Bettencourt lived with Stigny, in the Yonne, since 1963.

He was the brother of André Bettencourt.
