Pierre Auriol (1280 - 1322) was a theologist franciscain, born close to Gourdon, in Quercy.

In 1304, Pierre Auriol studies at the university of Paris, where it perhaps follows the teaching of Jean Duns Scot. In 1314, he teaches with Toulouse then with Paris. He is named Archevêque Aix in 1321. About the Immaculate Conception, it estimates, against the Dominican ones, that God preserved really the Virgin Mary Original sin (Tractatus of conceptione Beatae Mariae Virginis) . In his Of principiis (1312), Pierre Auriol studies the Matière and the Forme.

He proposes a Théorie of the knowledge which opposes the Concept S of intuitive knowledge and abstractive knowledge; The experiment shows not only the possibility but the reality of intuitive knowledge.

• For Pierre Auriol, the absolute character of intuitive knowledge is such as God can maintain it whereas any report/ratio with the Chose disappeared, and that the thing itself does not exist any more. It is a knowledge direct, présentielle, actualisatrice of the Objet while, by Abstraction, the things appear in a way quasi Imaginaire and like absent.

• the Experiment watch still that one owes, in knowledge sensitive and to stronger reason in intellectual knowledge, to make the Distinction between the apparent or intentional being and the real being. The Intellect place the thing in front of its Glance, in the being considering and objectively apparent.

Pierre Auriol comes thus to a theory from the Universel. The Intellect conceives neither its Acte, nor the object known as it founds the Relation with the Acte to know, but the objective concept itself. Any thing is by itself singular, but the Individuation by the Quantité withdraws the individual from the apprehension of our intelligence. In addition, it is impossible that a species or similarity represents the singular as such if it does not represent it in its own situation. The individual will be perceived not by intellect itself, but by the Imagination to which it is naturally unites in the act to know. ----
