Mgr Pierre-Sailor Rouph de Varicourt (May 9th 1755 with Gex - December 9th 1822 with Orleans), was a catholic Prêtre, representing clergy with the General states, appointed with the constituent Assembly of 1789 then bishop of Orleans.

Biography

Rouph de Varicourt, instead of choosing soldiering like wants it the family tradition, chooses the ecclesiastical career. Pierre Marin becomes cleaned of Gex. He is then elected of his province to the General states, then with the Jeu de Paume like deputy with the constituent Assembly of 1789. Refusing to lend the constitutional oath it is constrained to emigrate. Of return in France, it is named the August 8th 1817 bishop of Orleans where it dies the December 9th 1822.

Family

The family Rouph de Varicourt, originating in England, is installed since the 17th century in the Pays of Gex to Versonnex close to Ferney in the Ain. She is allied with all the notable families of the area with XVIIIe and XIXe century (Emery, Balleydier, Matherot, Borssat d' Hauterive, Girod of Ain, Masson d' Autume, Duval…)

Its members were distinguished by serving France, in particular in the Bodyguards of King de France.

  • Etienne Rouph de Varicourt, Brigadier died at his place in Gex on November 28th, 1780, husband of Gilberte Thrives Prez de Crassier, of which it had ten children:

  • His/her son, Pierre-Sailor Rouph de Varicourt, bishop of Orleans.

  • His/her daughter, Queen Philiberte Rouph de Varicourt, noticed by Voltaire at the time of his stay with Ferney; it makes his adopted girl of it, the Marie with the marquis de Villette and inserts it in the literary world under the name of “Beautiful and Good”.

  • François born the March 28th 1779 which succumbs under the blows at the time of the riots of the October 5th and 6th 1789 which lead the women of Paris to come to seek with Versailles “the Baker, the Baker and the Small Baker's boy”. Precipitating with the door of the royal apartments while shouting “Save the Queen! ”, it contains with another comrade, Miomandre de Sainte Marie, the rush of those which want to assassinate “the Austrian one”. Their courage will make it possible the Queen to take refuge in the apartment of the King. The head of François was sliced and put at the end of a spade, it is its head which one sees on engravings showing the people escorting the return of the royal family in Paris.

  • Claude Gabriel born on June 28th, 1778 which was accepted guard of the King in consideration of his killed brother.

  • Louis Marie Joseph, last bodyguard of the family, born on September 18th, 1768 and baptized in Gex on November 26th, 1769, which marries with London Marie Jeanne Therese Nadal de Saintrac, born with Low-Ground in Guadeloupe on March 31st, 1777, dies in the Martinique with the Lamentin on December 28th, 1799. From its marriage in London with Marie Jeanne Therese Nadal de Saintrac was born a son with Damping from the Martinique (St Pierre) on October 13rd, 1799, Louis Prosper Charles Therese Rouph de Varicourt.
