Pierre-Joseph Briot (April 17th 1771 with Orchamps-Vennes - March 18th 1827 with Auteuil) was a revolutionist French and an important political character. He was member of the freemasonry of Besancon and also member of the Bons coal cousins of the rite of the Large Alexandre of Confidence . For this reason, he played a big role in the Italian Carbonarisme.
In 1798 he becomes member of the Conseil of the Five hundred and is made known on its standpoint in favor of the Republic in Italy. Benefitting from certain high protections, it is named general secretary of the prefecture of Doubs in Besancon of 1800 to 1801.
Then becoming awkward, because of its political activism, it is exiled with the Isle of Elba, of 1802 to 1803 as a general commissioner the government .
After one period from where his trace is lost, it reappears in Italy, 1806 as a intendant of the province of the the Abruzzi , under the authority of Joseph Bonaparte.
In 1807, it is affected in Calabria and in 1809, it is named to advise State of Joachim Murat with Naples. He resigns in 1813 of it.
He returns to France at the time of the decline of the Napoleonean Empire and with the loss of the throne of Naples by Joachim Murat.
In 1817 it becomes to advise secret of the Minister for the Police force , the Duc Decazes until his revocation in June 1822 when it is indirectly questioned in the lawsuit for carbonarists activities of the “four sergeants” of the La Rochelle. A confidential relationship of May 20th, 1825 attests such an irrefutable fact: “ the sior Briot is a very dangerous man, and by the aggravation of its opinions and the influence which its place the capable met to exert. It for a long time did not cease being devoted to revolutionary intrigues, and in 1822 it had made of the principal clerks of the Phoenix as many agents of insurrection. Each inspector of this company was charged to spread in several departments which were indicated to him, the liberal doctrines and to organize sales of Carbonari there.”
At the time of its stay in the Isle of Elba it founds with Portoferraio the cabin " Friends of the Honor français".
From 1804 to 1806 Briot begins certain clandestine activities and has contacts with Philippe Buonarroti, then exiled with Sospel, which discreetly prepared the development of an Italian secret society to fine revolutionists. It introduced there the Charbonnerie inhabitant of Franche-Compt3e, kind of opposition to the freemasonry encouraged by Napoleon.
At the time of its presence in Calabria, it creates a new hearth of charbonnery and lance the cabin " Concorde" in Lanciano.
In 1810, it affiliates with the Rite of Misraïm brothers Bèdarride to which there will remain faithful until the end of its life. It will quickly become " there; Large Master AD vitam 90° degré" since 1815 and the cabin-mother " will found; Arc in Ciel".
At the time of the countryside of Italy it develops the charbonnery within the Neapolitan army. He was also member of the cabin " The Napoléon" Constellation; in Naples.
Of return in France, it integrates the misraimic maconnic cabin of Besancon " Sectateurs of Vérité" and will be representing it in Paris.
In spite of a police surveillance, Pierre-Joseph Briot could always not lend the side to direct attacks. It employed a pseudonym, Mr. SAINT-EDME , alias Edme Theodore Bourg, as much as possible to free itself from its responsibility to have to import ritual Good Coal Cousins in Naples and to make appear the theses carbonarists in connection with the projection of the republican and humanistic ideas in Europe of the XIX° century.
" Nevertheless, in spite of these reserves and all these precautions, Pierre-Joseph Briot seems in all connections to have kept a particular tenderness for the theses of Italian Carbonarisme and, as a declared republican anti-Bourbons, affirms by the edition of this work its occult vocation to instigate Charbonnerie Frenchwoman of the years 1820-1823 ".
