Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International airport of Montreal
the Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau international airport of Montreal or simply Montreal-Trudeau is located in the town of Dorval, Quebec, Canada, in the Agglomération of Montreal. It is the primary education airport serving the passenger traffic of the city. the other airport of the the metropolitan Community of Montreal, located with Mirabel, serves only the transport of the cargoes.
The airport was in the past called the International airport of Montreal-Dorval . It was renamed on January 1st 2004 with the memory of old the Prime Minister of Canada Pierre Elliott Trudeau, to the great displeasure of expropriés of the airport of Mirabel (built in open country under the Trudeau government and maintaining practically abandoned).
In June 2005, the new international pier and the complex of the international arrivals were inaugurated and are now in operation. The Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau international airport was one of the first airports in the world to be had a barrier of loading which can accommodate new the Airbus A380, whose arrival in Montreal is now planned for 2008 following the many delays met with a380 project at Airbus.
History
===La birth of Dorval=== The birth of the airport of Dorval goes back to beginning of the year 40 whereas the airport of Saint-Hubert, first official airport of Montreal in service since 1927, is not enough any more with the new needs for aviation montréalaise. The ministry for Transport then acquires the ground of the racecourse of Dorval, which offers the best site available. The airport of Montreal (Dorval) will begin its activities on September 1st, 1941 with three paved tracks. Since 1946, the airport accommodates already nearly a quarter of million passengers per annum and more than one million in the middle of the Fifties. Dorval is then the airport more stocked in Canada.
In November 1960, the airport is renamed “Montreal-Dorval International airport” and, on December 15th, the ministry for Transport inaugurates the new air terminal, at the cost of 30 million dollars. It is largest with Canada and one of largest in the world. Dorval is the main door in Canada for all the European traffic and the airport accommodates more than two million passengers in 1961.
Eight years later, the airport of Dorval requires a major program of expansion. Taking into account the increase envisaged in the air traffic and restrictions on the development of the airport in an urban environment, the Canadian government decides to build a new airport with Holy-Scholastique (Mirabel), where the international flights since 1975 will be transferred.
The appearance on stage of Mirabel
November 29th, 1975, the new “Montreal-Mirabel International airport” enters in service. Equipped with an operational zone of 7.000 hectares surrounded by a buffer zone of 29.000 hectares, it becomes the vastest airport site of the world by dealing with all the international flights, just as certain flights of correspondence bound for the great urban centres of the country. Twenty-three international air lines transfer their activities to it overseas. Consequently, the Montreal-Dorval International airport must redefine its own airport vocation by ensuring the interior flights (in Canada) as well as the transborder services bound for the United States. In the years which will follow, a new environment of businesses will take seat on a continent scale.
The role of Airports of Montreal
In December 1986, the federal government announces that Dorval and Mirabel will be joined together in an airport system integrated under only one structure of management. The installation of this new structure will begin on April 1st, 1988.In 1993, Aéroports of Montreal finishes its first complete exercise, dedicated to the simultaneous development of the two airports with a view to integrated regional development. In 1995, Aéroports of Montreal announces an investment plan of 150 million dollars to restore basic in roof the Montreal-Dorval International airport and to modify some of the infrastructures of the Montreal-Mirabel International airport.
Each of the two international airports has today of a mission and a specific crenel of development to compete with on the scale of North America. The Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau International airport of Montreal offers to the air companies and to the travellers of the correspondences integrated on all the types of scheduled flights while the Montreal-Mirabel International airport develops the sectors of the cargo liner and the industrialist.
The international airports Montreal-Trudeau and Montreal-Mirabel now carry out their airport vocations in conformity with the values and the mission of Airports of Montreal.
