Pierre-Antoine Poiteau
Pierre-Antoine Poiteau , sometimes improperly named Antoine Poiteau or Alexandre Poiteau , (Ambleny, 1766 - Paris, 1854) is a Botaniste and Horticulteur French.
Its life
After having been useful in the vegetable gardens, then at the Market-gardening S of the surroundings of Paris, it postulates in 1790 with the national Muséum of natural history and is admitted by André Thouin (1746-1824) as gardener. He studied the Systema vegetabilium there Carl von Linné. He then undertakes to supplement his formation, he learns in particular painting near the painter from the Natural history museum Gerard van Spaendonck (1746-1822) but one influences major remains Redouté (1759-1840). Thouin names it, two years later, chief of the school of botany.
In 1793, it was chosen by Daubenton to establish a school of botany and a botanical garden with Bergerac but this project fails. In 1796, Thouin urges it to leave to Saint-Domingue. He is imprisoned on his arrival because he does not have by papers necessary to justify his presence. A little later let us find we it with Haiti, as chief of the new garden of botany to the Cape. Not receiving treatment, it was forced to enter the administration as clerk of Hédouville and Roume, chiefs of the government of the island. It brought back of them, in 1802, six hundred packages of seeds and twelve hundred species S, all named and prepared by him. In the number ninety seven mushroom species and thirty foam species were. It makes appear, in 1808 in Paris, with Pierre Jean François Turpin (1775-1840), which it met with Haiti, Flora Parisiensis secundum systema sexuale deposita and plantarum circa Lutetiam sponte nascentium descriptiones, icons… .
Following a few free businesss year literary, it was, in 1815, appointed chief of the royal seedbeds of the Château of Versailles. It gives, in 1816, the shortened description of the plants which are cultivated in the Botanical garden of the Medical school of Paris (Paris). Two years later, with Antoine Risso (1777-1845), it makes appear its Natural history of the orange trees . Poiteau leaves, in 1818, Guyana where it supervises the setting in culture of the royal dwellings. It is named, with its return in 1822, gardener as a chief of the Château of Fontainebleau.
Of 1829 with 1851, it directs the horticultural Revue . In 1835, with Pierre Jean François Turpin, it republishes the Traité Fruit trees… of Henri Louis Duhamel of the Heap (1700-1782). In 1846, French Pomology. Collection of the most beautiful fruits cultivated in France… (Paris). In 1848 and 1853 appear two volumes of sound Cours of horticulture . Member of several learned societies, Poiteau was later chief of the botanical garden of the medical school, then of that of the natural history museum of natural history, to which it made gift of all the animals and plants brought back of the Guyana. He discovered many species and kinds of plants, and he created even several families (the Cyclanthée S, for example). Like Horticulturist and pomologist, it, in addition to, contributed much to the improvement of the fruits of table. As artist, it is estimated and its aquarellées Lithographie S is required amateurs. For this reason, it is compared with Pierre-Joseph Redouté.
