Pidgin (in the past Gaim) is a Free software multiprotocol customer of Instant messaging making it possible to connect itself amongst other things to Jabber, IRC, ICQ/AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.

Pidgin is a Free software and free under license LPG, available under GNU/Linux and Windows. He was written by using the library GTK+. In addition to the current operating systems, there exists also a version of pidgin for the PDA Qtopia on site QPE Gaim. And the PortableApps.com site provides a portable version of Pidgin for key USB.

Pidgin was written by detaching the interface of logic, thus it exists a library, the Libpurple, making it possible to write other free software comprising this same logic. Adium, the customer of instant messaging under Mac OS X takes again Libpurple, just as WengoPhone.

Gaim (GTK+ AOL Instant Messenger) was famous in Pidgin on April 6th, 2007 because of complaints of the company AOL. The name using the registered trademark AIM of AOL. Libgaim was famous in Libpurple and gaim-text became " Finch".

  • Support of the proxies in HTTP or SOCKS 4 or 5.
  • Handwriting verification (for this function, it is necessary to install Aspell moreover)

Protocols supported by grafts (plugins) not provided with Pidgin

The plugins below do not appear in the list of the plugins. In the place, they create new entries in the field protocol of the editor of account and makes it possible the user to be connected to new networks of discussion or instant messaging.

  • SNPP (Simple Network Paging Protocol), third plugin for this protocol in Purple Plugin Pack. Sources and binary available.

The software makes it possible to be connected at the same time on several waiters by using several different protocols.

Cryptography

The messages can be encrypted by using a plugin Off-tea-Record Messaging (OTR) available on the Web site of project OTR.

There is also a plugin Pidgin-Encryption which uses coding RSA.

Plugins additional

It is about plugins normal i.e. that they do not add additional protocols. On the other hand they appear in the list of the plugins and provide additional functionalities.

  • Guifications is a plugin for Pidgin which posts a small window during a few seconds in a corner of the screen defines by the user. This window posts messages of the " type; Jacques you écrit" or " Georges is connecté" with a sound according to the actions. This plugin has functions similar to those which were added in the official customers like MSN Messenger (now called Windows Live Messenger), Yahoo! Messenger and AOL Instant Messenger. It is very configurable, easy to use, and has a support of the topics. The French topics are available to this place. Sources and binary Windows available.

  • Purple Plugin Pack is a whole of plugins (48 plugins) which adds various functionalities missing to Pidgin. The banner page lists the totality of the plugins and details summarily them. The files to have these French plugins are available to this place. Sources and binary Windows available.
  • Pidgin Windows Position Manager is a plugin for Pidgin which makes it possible the user to parameterize the position of the window of discussion and other windows which belong to Pidgin. It is the signal for the people who want to open their window of discussion on a second monitor/screen or anywhere but not the corner higher right of their principal screen. Sources and binary Windows available.
  • CurrentTrack is a plugin which posts the track of music listened by the user in information of the user Gaim/Pidgin, message available or message absent, and the icon of the contact. That functions with the readers multi-media iTunes, Winamp, RealPlayer, WMP, Musicmatch, MediaMonkey, XMPlay, Yahoo! and Foobar2000 under Windows and XMMS, Rhythmbox, & Amarok under Linux.   • Music Info is a plugin which makes the same thing that the plugin CurrentTrack above, but is limited to the Winamp readers or compatible by API.
  • Extended Preferences is a plugin which adds additional preferences which were often required in the past for Pidgin and which either is already implemented and hidden, or or unimportant to be implemented via a plugin.
  • gaim-vv is a plugin which adds the support of the video and the audio to Gaim 1.4 or 1.5 for the Yahoo! services Messenger and MSN Messenger and for Linux/Unix only. No the Windows support and the binary available ones. To compile.
