Pico (software)

Pico is a text editor for the computers equipped with systems UNIX, and is integrated in the software of email Pine. It was conceived by the Office off Computing and Communications of the Université of Washington.

According to FAQ of Prick, “the editor to compose the messages in Pine ( pi Co mposition editor in English) is also available as an independent program, called PICO. PICO is a text editor very simple and easy to use, allowing the justification of the paragraphs, it to copy/stick, a orthographical Correcteur…” On the other hand, it is unable to publish several files simultaneously, which prohibits handling such as copying it to him/sticking of part of a file in another.

Pico is generally used by those which begin under UNIX, but of many experienced users also use it to write their email. The interface of Pico is by many manners similar to that which one can find functioning in the editors under Windows, such as Notepad.

In comparison, the very powerful editors on the systems Unix, such as VI or Emacs, provide all the conceivable functionalities for a tool of text-editing, including research and replacements with rational expressions, the possibility of working on several files at the same time, and well more. However, they are usually more difficult to use and control.

The project GNU has a clone of Pico called Nano. Nano was developed because the license of Pico was not regarded as free compared to the rules of DFSG.
