Picidae

The picidés (or Picidae ) are Oiseau X of small size to rather large (from 7,5 to 60 cm), with the nozzle fairly long right. Their short legs carry 4 long fingers, some species by having only 3. The majority have the long tail, with solids median rectrices. Their long language is provided with a barbed point, adapted to seize the insects. They are almost cosmopolitan, except for the areas of most septentrional and of Australia. They live in the forests, the wooded areas and the meadows, since the cold moderate areas to the tropics.

One distinguishes three groups in the family from Picidés:

Contrary to other Picidés, the torcols do not dig cavities in the trees to nest but use natural cavities. They also live in forest mediums.

The picumnes are small peaks originating mainly in the forests of South America (one meets of them only three species in Asia and only one in Africa). Like the majority of truths peaks, they are zygodactyles but their rectrices are softer and round that those of the peaks. For this reason, one observes them more often perched than hung to the trunks of the trees. Like the peaks, they have also a lengthened language, but their nozzle is less pointed and less length. They preferably seek their preys in the trunks in decomposition. To nest, they often re-use cavities given up by the peaks.
