Opened with Milan, via Rovello, in spring 1947 by Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler, the Piccolo Teatro di Milano was installed in a cinema unused of some 400 places. The two directors had for ambition to create popular and of good intellectual level and artistic plays there. In a spirit close to the popular National theater, NPT launched with Paris and Avignon by Jean Vilar.
