Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria (the place of the Seigniory) is one of the great places of Florence, in Tuscany (Italy) which dates from in its current form (in L).

Excavations put at the day of the important traces of Roman and medieval dwellings.

It is, since its creation, a meeting room of Florentins and was the witness as much popular festivities ( Calcio storico ), sumptuous festivals, revolutions and torments (Savonarole there was tortured and burned in 1498), by its architectural framework bordered of prestigious monuments dating from the Renaissance. It is a civic place, independent of the episcopal place.

  • Until 2001, the Museum of Modern art (Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, Gino Severini, Giacomo Manzu, Salvatore, Rosai, Renato Guttuso), transferred since to the Palate Pitti and become the modern Art gallery.
