Piazza del Campo

The Piazza del Campo (or It Campo ) is the principal place of the town of His. It is recognizable by its form curved like an amphitheater, giving to its bottom on the Palazzo Pubblico and its tower the high Torre del Mangia of 102 Mr. the horse-race the Palio, twice a year takes place on this place then covered with ground for each runner representing its '' contrada '' (of the 17 districts of the city).

History

The town of His was always proud and powerful, at the point to compete with Florence. In spite of the fights of factions between Guelfe S (partisans of the pope) and Gibelin S (partisans of the emperor) and the conflicts with its neighbors (1260), the municipality of His developed a constant care to embellish the city. In Italy where all the cities show their power proudly by orchestrating their capacity by a town planning highly politicized, His made built Piazza del Campo like a true emblem.

Benefitting from important work to the palate of the commune, the Sienans begin at the beginning of the 13th century the work of the campo. Since 1218, officers delegated by the commune survey and limit the space of the future place. Considerable sums are allocated there: one releases in particular the spaces encumbered by various masonries. To give space to this place, the communal officers decide to join together between them two campi: the Campo San Paolo and the Campo del Fioro . They buy the neighbouring gardens, then the houses; a wall is high to protect the place from the water which regularly invades it in autumn and winter. In same time, one reorganizes the trade: the wine merchants, the butchers, the peasants and the markets must go to settle close to the doors of the strengthened enclosure. Work however takes delay taking into account expropriations to carry out (staircases, grounds and balconies encumber public space during more than fifty years; the waste water and waste are regularly thrown there).

This splendid place makes the pride of the municipality which, since 1250, employs custodes to supervise the campo. 19 articles of the urban statutes of 1262 specify the constraints and the payments on the place (to drive out the vagrants, prostitutes, to interdir the cavalcades).

The Palio, race unrestrained and brutal which had been run a long time out the walls, from now on is installed by the commune on the campo . The race thus loses part of its violence.
