Its course is directed in direction of south-east during 220 km before emerging in the Adriatic Sea not far from Venice. Its catchment area covers a surface of 4100 km ². Its average interannual flow or module is of 135 m ³ /s with the mouth.

Geography

The river Piave is born in the Alps Orientales and more precisely in the Alpi Carniche, on southernmost slopes of the Monte Peralba, in the commune of Sappada, in Province of Belluno, at an altitude of 2.037 Mr. It is the fifth river of Italy for its length, among those which are thrown directly in the sea. After 220 km, It emerges in the Adriatic Sea, in the North-East of Venice, close to the port of Cortellazzo between Eraclea and Jesolo. On the left, the mouth is called Laguna del Mort, enclave of not very deep sea water delimited by the dead arm of the river.

The river is entirely contained in the area of Venezia, although the basin touches partially the provinces of Pordenone, Thirty and Bolzano. It crosses Comelico (whole of communes), the Cadore (mountainous area of the Dolomites) and the Valbelluna (Po Valley Belluno, another zone of Dolomites) in the Province of Belluno and the Vènète plain in the provinces of Trévise and Venice, concerning the towns of Valdobbiadene, Nervesa della Battaglia, Colfosco, Ponte della Priula, Ponte di Piave, San Donà di Piave, Eraclea and Jesolo.

Already, few kilometers after the source, the Piave produce a notable flow due to the surge of many torrents, Limité recently by the construction of the artificial hydroelectric basins and drains for agriculture.

Affluents

  • On the right: Ansiei, Padola, Limp, Cordevole, Maè, Ardo di Belluno, Sonna, Caorame
  • On the left: Terche, Ardo della Sinistra Piave, Soligo

Most important of all is Cordevole, with a catchment area of 866,77 km.

Lakes

Along the course of the river and its principal affluents many dams which form artificial lakes, used for the hydroelectric force are. :
  • along Cordevole and of Put: lake of Alleghe, Lake of Ghirlo (with Cencenighe Agordino), Lake of Put the
  • along Ansiei: lake of Misurina, Lake Santa Caterina (with Auronzo di Cadore)
  • along Piave: Lake of the Comelico, Lac of Centro Cadore
  • along Limps: Lake of Vodo di Cadore, Lake of Valle di Cadore
  • along Maè: Lake Pontesei,
  • on Tesa (deviation of Piave): lake of S.Croce
In Busche a Barrage takes water which is used to feed the power stations of Quero and Pederobba, and for the needs for irrigation.

History

At the XVI century, the old course of the Piave was deviated by an artificial channel (Taglio LED Re), towards the East with the height of Caposile, fraction of Musile di Piave, on decision of the engineers hydraulicians of the Sérénissime, to avoid the important contribution of sediments and the stranding of the lagoon. This dead arm allowed the Sile, as from the XVII century, to throw itself in the Adriatic, by the old mouth of the Piave (known as also " Piave Vecchia") who separates the communes from Jesolo and Cavallino-Treporti.

Until October 5th, 1935, “Laguna LED Died”, was not other than the last section of river and its mouth. At the time Piave ran perpendicular to the line of coast until a few hundred meters of the Adriatic Sea. Just near the locality of Cortellazzo, the river formed a right angle on the left and ran on approximately 3 km, is threw daN the sea. This day, with maximum of a rising, Piave just broke the right dam in the curve towards the North-East and was thrown immediately in the sea, giving up its old bed and obstructing, by the mud and sand contribution, its mouth and the river even. This last part of Piave, private of contribution out of fresh water, will be clogged by the only action of the tides. With time, the dead arm of the mouth of Piave it is slowly buried, becoming the natural habitat of hundreds of marine birds and lagunaires

The river Piave is regarded as crowned for the fatherland, under the terms of the historical events which proceeded there during the First World War.

The southernmost part of the course of the Piave becomes a strategic line important in November 1917 following the Italian demolished of Caporetto. After the passage on Right Bank of the remainder of the Italian army and the destruction of the bridges, the river becomes the line of defense against the Austrian and German which, in spite of various attempts, will not succeed in crossing the river. The difficulty to cross was also had at the period of Inondation of the river due to the strong rains. The line resisted until October 1918 when, following the Bataille of Vittorio Veneto, the adversaries were overcome and constrained with the Armistice.

The victory of the Italians signed the end of the Austro-Hungarian army, and indirectly that of the empire of Habsbourgs.

Catastrophe of Longarone

The October 9th 1963, the artificial lake of the Vajont (affluent of Piave) starts a catastrophic wave of 35 million cubic meters of ground and 200 meters in height. It invades the valley of Piave and destroyed the villages in the neighborhood making 2168 dead.

Ambiantaux problems

The great hydrous development and the abandonment partial of the natural bed of the river, do of Piave one of the most artificial rivers of Europa. From second half of the year 1990 started has to emerge, consequently, a ambiantale question related to Piave, which carried to the request, addressed in particular to 'ENEL, to ensure the flow vital minimum of the river. The " case Piave" was raised and paused, different cave, by the administration of the Province of Belluno and by “Central Internazionale Civiltà dell' Acqua” of Mogliano Veneto, in particular its cofounder, the writer and journalist Renzo Franzin. According to what the local newspaper Corriere delle Alpi reports, in 2007 with Belluno with the support of the actions “Marie Curie” of the European commission, a seminar will be held of research on the topic of the exploitation of the Piave river and the use of water.

The word " Piave" is, in the local and dialectal use, of the female kind. Today, however, the prevalent use (in standard Italian language exclusively) is male. The form female however is used, to underline a bond with the local culture.
