Phytalos is a character of the Greek Mythologie. When the goddess Déméter traversed the world in the search of her daughter Perséphone, Phytalos cordially accommodated it at his place close to Éleusis. To thank it created the Figue and the first fig tree gave him. One could see his tomb on the road between Athens and Éleusis with the following epitaph:
“Hero and king, Phytalos offered warm welcome to Déméter,
The majestic goddess then made know a new fruit;
Crowned fig is the name which the mortals have to him donnée.
That Phytalos and its descendants receive eternal honors from them. ”
