Photonic

The photonic is generally associated with the study of components allowing the generation, the transmission, the treatment (Modulation, Amplification) or the conversion of optical signals. The Photodétecteur is at the border between the photonic one and the electronic and belongs to the field of the Optoélectronique, like the lasers with semiconductor. The photonic one is also largely associated with the integrated Optique.

The photonic term is also an adjective which refers to the light and the photon. One speaks for example about " photonic Crystal ".

The photonic term is also used in words made up indicating of new sciences or technologies using the light: Nanophotonique, Biophotonique.

The photonic term is of recent creation and its contours are still badly defined. It is formed on the same model as the electronic term. One can consequently put in parallel the couples optics-photonic and electricity-electronics. However in the first case the first term is resulting from the old Greek ὀπτική, " who relates to the vue" whereas second is resulting from φοτον, " lumière".

The components studied within the framework of photonic are in particular the laser , the DELs, the fiberoptics, the modulating optics, the amplifying optics.
