History

As of its appearance, the photographic image immediately allured the world of the press and information by its apparent objectivity. Impossible to print at the same time as the text, it is a long time reproduced in Gravure, and is used as illustration with the writing. The image remains a long time in shift compared to the event which she reports because of the important time between the taken of sight and its publication.

Photography keeps the statute of illustrative image until in 1890, date of the invention of the Similigravure from which the illustrated press experiences a world development. The company of the end of the 19th century is thirsty for “news”. “With photography a window opens on the world” (Gisele Freund). The foreigner becomes familiar.

The couple Journalist/Photographer of which famous the Albert London /Moreau or Joseph Kessel /Zucoon is more and more often replaced by it press photographer which covers only its subject. He becomes journalist with whole share and does not need more the guarantee of a “feather”. Its apparatus plays the same part as also the microphone and the television camera will do it.

The large newspapers of information like Life , Fortune or Paris-Match have teams of several tens of reporters which furrow the world or use photoreporters of News agency. It is said whereas they are in “ assignment ”.

After the war, these Reporter S integrates the news agencies because the newspapers reduce the number of their employees. Moreover, they want to have a right to watch on the use of their work. It is the great time of the “ news ” whose Robert Capa is the legendary prototype.

The photojournalists of the Années 1960 are the heroes who traverse the battle fields, of the Vietnam to the Biafra, of the Pakistan to the Northern Ireland.

Today arises the question of the future of this trade with the universalization of the means of communication and their concentration within some great international groups.
