One uses the photo finish in competition S of Course, when two competitors (or more) pass the finishing line in a very reduced time interval. When the difference cannot be noticed with the naked eye, one takes a series of photographs drawn very quickly the ones after the others (to 1000 photographs a second) or a video to check the results with precision. Nowadays, one uses numerical cameras, started by Laser S or photovoltaic cells.

Formerly, a photographer was placed on the finishing line, and took a photograph at the time of the arrival of the competitors. Today, the photo finish is used in practically all the competitions of races. Certain competitions use black boxes placed on the competitors, but the photo finish is regarded as the most precise proof. The Natation makes exception to the photo finish - athletes being with difficulty photographiables - and uses tactile bands.

Athletics

In athletics, the stopwatches must be precise with the hundredth and even with the thousandths of the second. In the important competitions like OJ, the photo finish is connected to an electronic system, just like the gun which gives the departure. On a race of 100 meters it is not rare that eight runners pass the finishing line to less than one second of variation. See Official (athletics)
