The Photo-drama of Creation was a presentation including/understanding of the still images and animated synchronized with musical recordings and speeches diffused using Phonographe S, produced by Société Watchtower, the legal entity used still today by the Witnesses of Jéhovah. It started to be used in 1914 and, before the end of this year, more than 9.000.000 people in North America, in Europe and Australia had witnessed this projection. The posted objective of the Photo-Drama was of “attracts (...) crowd and to make known the Évangile, so that the public is brought back to the Foi in God”.

Description and technical sides

Charles Taze Russell, the founder of the Company Watchtower, estimated that the films were an excellent means of reaching a great multitude of people. In 1912, it started to prepare the Photo-drama of Creation. This one was a one duration production of approximately eight hours, including/understanding photographic Diapositive S and Film S, with colors and sound. Conceived to be held in four parts, the Photo-drama took along the spectators since the creation, such as it is presented in the Bible, through the human history, until the end of the thousand-year-old reign of Jesus Christ, according to the vision which the biblical authors give and according to the comprehension of the movement of the Étudiants of the Bible (name of the Témoins of Jéhovah before 1931).

In January 1914, at the time of the Silent film, an assistance of 5.000 people met in the Temple, a building located in 63 rue Ouest, with New York, to attend the first projection of the Photo-drama of Creation. Some did not succeed in entering, for lack of place. In front of the assistance, there was an enormous screen of Cinéma. Progressively of projection, the people could see Russell, then old of a little more than 60 years, appear with the screen and its lips to start to move, and hear the following words: The Photo-drama of Creation is presented by a.I.E.B., the International association of the Students of Bible. The Slide S and the Film were synchronized with phonographic discs of speech and Musique. At the time, several experiments of color films and with its had been carried out, but without however met business success. It is in 1922 that the first Film of feature-length film entirely colors is appeared, and the public generally had to await 1927 to attend a Film where the dialog and the music are combined. Nevertheless, the Photo-drama of Creation included already the color, the spoken word and the Musique. Thus, this projection constituted at the time a company advanced over its time, and of many people viewed it free. In Europe, in six months, more than 1.226.000 people witnessed her projection in 98 towns of Great Britain. In Germany, in Swiss, in the country Scandinavia and Peaceful South, the film was also diffused. The average day laborer of spectators turned around 35.000. For the occasion, the Étudiants of the Bible rented public rooms.

Approximately 300.000 Dollar S American S were spent by the Société Watchtower in the production of the Photo-drama .

Selected musical recordings as 96 phonographic speeches were prepared. Diapositive S were carried out, illustrating the History of the world, and of the hundreds of new tables and sketch were added thereafter. All the Slide S and color films had to be painted with the hand, and part of this work was made in the Room of drawing of the Société Watchtower itself. At least twenty whole of four parts was carried out, making thus possible the projection of part of the Photo-drama in eighty cities simultaneously.

In the beginning of the Years 1920, the films of the Photo-drama of Creation were almost worn. Nevertheless, the Société Watchtower succeeded in buying biblical Film S several business firms and, after having revised them (it removed certain parts considered unsuitable, and added others of them), it succeeded in projecting them. Thus, of entirely new films were added. In addition to that, slides which had been projected were also substituted by the new engravings taken starting from the book Création and other publications published by the Société Watchtower, or by the slides obtained in the government contract. As there was no Photographie colors at that time, it was necessary to improve with Couleur S the photographs in black and white.

The Eureka-drama

Eight month after the first presentation of the Photo-drama of Creation, the Société Watchtower launched another version, called lEurêka-drama . While the Photo-drama continued to be projected in the big cities, the Eureka-drama , although not proposing a Film S, presented the same basic message and was projected in less populated areas. This version being shortened, the box of the phonographic discs weighed only 14 kilos, without counting the Phonographe, which despite everything made it easier to carry and easy to handle.
