Phocoenoides Dali

The Marsouin of Dall (Phocoenoides Dali) is the only one representing kind Phocoenoides. It holds its name of the American naturalist William Healey Dall (1845-1927).

The porpoise of Dall is present in cool water of the northern Pacific along the coasts as in open sea.

Its principal characteristics are the following ones:

  • the adult has a size ranging between 1,70 and 2,20 meters.
  • delivered black and white is contrasted.
  • the fin is prominent and in the shape of hook.
  • it swims quickly (up to 50 km/h) and is hyperactive.
  • it approaches the boats readily in particular when they are fast to overlap the blades of the wake.
  • it lives in small groups.
  • the plume of scum has a form in " tail of coq".

The species drew the attention of the whole world, when one discovered into 1970 that fishing vessels to salmon, killed some out of the thousands by capturing them in an accidental way.
