Phnom Rung
Khao Phnom Rung is the name of an extinct volcano since 900 000 years over which was set up as from the 10th century the temple Prasat Phnom Rung (Thai: ปราสาทพนมรุ้ง). Khao Phnom Rung is in the south of the province of Buriram in Thailand close to the border of the Kampuchea.
When the temple was set up at the top of Khao Phnom Rung of the modifications were brought to the crater to convert it into drinking water tank.
Phnom Rung was the original name of the volcano, but also that of the temple since, the name appears, on four inscriptions in Khmer alphabet découvertent on Prasat Phnom Rung. The name Phnom Rung drift of the Khmer word Vnam Rung which means broad mountain, just as the words S-Thuadri and S-Thula Saila written by means of other alphabets Khmer in Sanskrit.
Prasat Phnom Rung is a sanctuary dedicated to the Pasupata sect of the Hindouisme Sivaïte. Construction at the top of Khao Phnom Rung is compared with the residence of the god Shiva on the mount Kailash.
The buildings inside the complex of Prasat Phnom Rung are divided into four chronological periods:
- oldest is the two turns of bricks of style of Koh Ker, built at the 10th century.
- the second period, is with, it is the erection of Prasat Noi constuit in the style of the Baphuon.
- At the time of the third period, the majority of the other buildings were set up, in particular the principal tower.
- At the fourth period, the two named bookstores Bannalai were set up between and it in the style of the Bayon.
