Philpot business

The business Philpot is a politico-media business Québécois E which has occurred when the daily newspaper Montreal board the Press , a newspaper pertaining to the liberal businessman Paul Desmarais, revealed that Robin Philpot, candidate of the Parti Québécois at the time of the Québécois General election 2007, was the object of reproaches as for a possible vulgarizing of the Génocide of the Tutsi S and Hutu S moderated with the Rwanda (see: Genocide in Rwanda).

In the Press

During the electoral campaign (March 2007), the work of Philpot on the Génocide in Rwanda (“ That did not occur like that to Kigali ”, Montreal, Untouchable the, 2003) is evoked by the Québécois media and its remarks considered as Négationniste embarrass the chief pequist André Boisclair which was dissociated from the remarks of its candidate, before defending it publicly. Philpot never affirms not to have denied the existence of the genocide of the Tutsi S and tries to moderate its remarks. The researchers Pierre Trudel and Callixte Kabayiza however reproach him for supporting (like made Filip Reyntjens and Abdul Joshua Ruzibiza) that the Hutu S were also victims of a genocide.

Previous cases

Philpot had been already made indicate of “negationnist” in an article of the French daily newspaper Libération by the journalist Christophe Ayad. Ayad had treated Charles Onana and Robin Philpot “of negationnists authors” for their remarks at the time of an international symposium on Rwanda with the university of the Sorbonne. Onana brought on this subject a continuation in slandering against the French newspaper and obtained win. Conferences with Toulouse also gave place to charges of negationnism (see low Amnistia.net site and article of M.V. Russet-red).

Public reactions

Into full camapagne electoral, the political parties tried to be made capital poltic. Thus, the interdependent party Quebec condemned the remarks of the Philpot candidate. The Prime Minister for Quebec Jean Charest deplored the remarks of the candidate pequist and declared that “if it persists in denying the obviousness, Robin Philpot will be guilty to standardize the Rwandan genocide”. And finally, Mario Dumont declared that “somebody who calls in question this thesis of the genocide is not only a little with counter-current of reality”.

The resignation of the candidate of the Parti Québécois was claimed as much by its adversaries of the other parties as by defenders of the memory of Crimes against humanity. The Rwandan ones domiciled with the Canada highly criticized Philpot on various Canadian chains televised whose Radio-Canada and the international Journée of the woman (March 8th, 2007) was the occasion to recall, in this respect, the rapes and the acts of Barbarie made at the time of the Génocide.

With the defense of Philpot

The opinions of Mr. Philpot were supported by the newspaper the Duty like by a considerable share of the Québécois intellectual elite. Although denounced on first page by the Press (March 8th, 2007), Philpot moreover was defended by the militant Pierre Dubuc, Lysiane Gagnon, Louis Cornellier and by the Rwandan Congrès of Canada.

Dependant businesses

Philpot in addition carried charges against the Canadian William Schabas, Helene Pinske, André Paradis and Louise Arbor to have taken share in claimed the competition between USAFRICOM and the Françafrique. It also pleads that the person of Michaëlle Jean was used to legitimate the evacuation of the president Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
