Philogene Auguste Joseph Duponchel
Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel is a Militaire and a Entomologiste French, born in 1774 with Valencian and dead the January 10th 1846 with Paris.
After studies with Douai, it joined at sixteen years the French Army and takes part in the campaigns of 1795 and 1796. He works after with the administration and is stationed with Paris. He is put in early withdrawal at 42 years, in 1816, because of his opinions in favor of Bonaparte.
He can then devote himself to his passion: the study of the Insecte S. It finishes in 1838, after twelve years of effort, the Natural history of the lépidoptères of France started with Jean-Baptiste Godart (1775-1825). This work counts seventeen volumes (including twelve signed by Duponchel), 7.600 colored pages and 500 boards (those appear under the title of Iconographie of the Caterpillars ). It appears of 1832 with 1842 and one finds there the description of more than four thousand species of butterflies.
Duponchel takes part in the creation of the entomological Société of France and in is its first treasurer. He is very close to Pierre-François-Marie-Auguste Dejean (1780-1845), of Auguste Duméril (1812-1870) and Pierre André Latreille (1762-1833).
He is buried with the Cimetière of Montparnasse.
