Philipponnat champagne

Champagne Philipponnat is a mark and a house of Wine from champagne, founded in 1910 with Mareuil-on-Aÿ.

It is owner of a vineyard of 17 hectares, primarily planted in Pinot black and distributed on the communes of Aÿ, Avenay, Mareuil-on-Aÿ and Mutigny. It supplements its supplies grapes while buying with several vine growers installed on soils in Côte of the White, Vallée of the Marne and Montagne de Reims.

History

The Philipponnat family originating in Freiburg in Switzerland, settles with Aÿ in 1522. The blazon with red checkerwork and gold, which is today still the emblem of the House was recorded on July 28th, 1697.

Owners of vineyards, Established out of Champagne since the beginning of the XVI° century (1522 with AY ), Philipponnat devote themselves, under the Second Empire, with the development of the Wine from champagne. The Philiponnat House is created in 1910 during the acquisition of historical cellars dug at the 18th century with Mareuil-on-Aÿ.

In 1935, the House buys the Field of Goisses, a vineyard of exception of 5,5 hectares all in slopes at exit of the village, exposed to the south and dominating the valley of the Marne. Its slope reaching 45% confers an exceptional maturity to him which undoubtedly makes of it largest of Champagnes of table , while the chalky basement and the absence of malolactic fermentation preserve all the minerality to him which sied with Champagne and an incredible longevity, which can exceed 50 years (Ahh… the 1952…).

The house is directed today by Charles Philipponnat (Science-Po, Insead, license in right). Wire of Rene Philiponnat which was during 40 years, chief of cellar of Moet & Chandon. According to one amusing legend, it would have invented a new technique of development of a vintage medium dry wine by using a batch of vintage champagne 1991 which proved tired. Refusing to transform it into crude without year, it would have modified proportioning while adding to it of sugar and yeasts, in order to obtain a new catch of foam. That would have given rise to the “Sublime Vintage Holds”, first vintage vintage medium dry wine of the modern era of Champagne. The truth requires to accept that it was only about one simple proportioning, not of an illegal and hazardous refermentation… but the result, exceptional, is-there: one of the very rare proportioned vintages (dry or half dryness) of the Champagne which is really created starting from vintage high-class wines of best 1st and Great wines…

The origin is less mythological but quite as noble.
