Philippe de Vigneulles
Philippe Gerard , known as of Vigneulles (1471 - 1528) was commercial and chronicler French.
His/her father, Jean Gerard, were a simple peasant. He made him fortune in the trade of cloths, at the point to become notable and a great figure of the town of Metz. He wrote an immense chronicle mixing autobiography, universal history and description of the daily life of his city, and Hundred New news (1505), one of the first appearances like the Nouvelle in France.
Philippe de Vigneulles was born in Vigneulles (attached to Trolley-the-Metz in 1810) in 1471 in a country family. Schoolboy with Vigneulles then with Truck he becomes apprentices clothier in Metz, then will work in a notary. Different with its Master forces it to leave. It joined Italy, in 1486, with foot without resource, warning his father. It will stop one year in Geneva. It goes to Rome, Naples, deviend servant and traverses the south of Italy. Returned in Metz in 1489 he works in a clothier. He is removed with his father by brigants who retains it one year in the area of Briey. He is released against the payment of a ransom.
Philippe de Vigneulles with writing: - the Chronicle of Metz, Lorraine and FRANCE - a newspaper of its life and that of the town of Metz until 1520 - a collection of hundred tales called the Hundred news He died about 1527-1528.
The Chronicle of Philippe de Vigneulles starts with the foundation of the world and goes until in 1525. It is a universal chronicle; however Philippe is interested particularly in history of Metz and, in the second place, with the French history. He was chaussetier, trade which consisted in selling cloth and to make men's wears (fit). This chronicle is a rare document, because Philippe de Vigneulles “writes the language which was to be that of the good merchants of Metz, French pronounced the made-to-order of Metz and nouveau riche innumerable lotharingisms” (CH. Bruneau). Here two extracts of the Chronicle.
