Philippe Ier de Tarente

Philippe 1st of Anjou , born the November 10th 1278, died in Naples the December 26th 1332, prince de Tarente and of Achaïe, despot of Romania by its first marriage, and titular emperor of Constantinople by its second marriage, wire of Charles {{II}} of Anjou, king de Naples, and of Marie of Hungary.

Biography

It was charged with his brother Robert to fight the king Frederic {{II}} of Sicily in 1299, but wanting to obtain glory to only succeed, it engaged without awaiting his brother in a combat with Formicara where he was wounded and made captive. Angevins of Naples were thus constrained, by its defeat, to give up their forwarding.

In 1315, Florence, fights about it with the Gibelin S of Pisa, required helps of king de Naples, who sent to them Philippe with the head of an army. The battle between the two armies take place with Montecatini and Philippe, in spite of his courage and its efforts, lost the battle, its brother, Pierre, count de Gravina, and his Charles oldest son.

In 1318, it had more success at the side of his/her brother Robert the wise one, king de Naples, when they defended Genoa against Gibelins.

Marriages and children

He married in Aquila in 1294 Thamar Ange (1277 † 1311), girl of Nicéphore 1st, despot of Epire, and Anne Cantacuzène. They had:

* Charles born in 1296, it accompanied his/her father in war against Pisa and was killed in 1315 with the battle of Montecatini;
* Philippe (1297 † 1330), despot of Romanie, which married Yolande d' Aragon, girl of the king Jacques {{II}} of Aragon;
* Marguerite (1298 † 1340), married in 1325 with Gautier VI, count de Brienne († 1356), titular duke of Athens and lord of Argos;
* White († 1338), married in 1327 with infant Raymond Berenger d' Aragon, count d' Empúries;
* Marie, dead young.

He repudiated Thamar in 1309 and married in second weddings with Fontainebleau in 1313 Catherine {{II}} of Valois-Courtenay, titular empress of Constantinople, girl of Charles of France, count de Valois, and of Catherine de Courtenay (1303 † 1346). They had:

* Robert (1315 † 1364), prince de Tarente and of Achaïe, married in 1347 in Marie de Bourbon (1315 † 1377);
* Louis (1320 † 1362), king de Naples;
* Marguerite (1325 † 1380), married in 1352 in François of the Beams (1330 † 1422), duke of Andria;
* Marie († 1368), abess of Conversano;
* Jeanne († 1393), married in 1316 with Oshim, king d' Arménie (1282 † 1320);
* Philippe {{II}} of Tarente (1329-1374), prince de Tarente.
