Philippe III of Spain (April 14th 1578 with Madrid, March 31st 1621 with Madrid) was king d' Espagne, king de Portugal and of Algarves ( Philippe II of Portugal ) of 1598 to its death.

He is the son of Philippe II of Spain and his fourth wife Anne of Austria, his niece, girl of the emperor Maximilien II of the Holy roman Empire.

The old king had admitted that God had not given him wire able to govern his vast dominions, and Philippe III is raised by his servants. Its forecasts were justified. To its death, the May 6th 1598, the new king gives the direction of his government in the hands of its favorite, Francisco Goméz de Sandoval there Rojas, duke of Lerma, before falling, in 1618, under the influence of the son of Lerma, Cristóbal de Sandoval, duke of Uceda, and also granting its confidence to him and the government.

Philippe III passes his life in the ostentation and the festivities of the court, wasting enormous sums of money, or in practice of piety. One says of him, that it is so virtuous, that it is unable to make a venial sin.

Marriage and descent

The April 18th 1599, Philippe III marries his cousin Marguerite of Austria-Styrie, sister of the emperor Ferdinand II. They had eight children among whom:
  • Anne (1601-1666), queen of France, married to Louis XIII, mother of Louis XIV

  • Philippe IV (1605-1665), king d' Espagne
  • Marie-Anne, empress of Germany, married with the emperor Ferdinand III of the Holy roman Empire
  • Charles of Spain (1607-1632)
  • Ferdinand (1609-1641), said the Cardinal-Infant, cardinal-archbishop of Tolède, governor of the Spanish Netherlands and famous captain of the War Thirty Year old
