Philippe III of Macedonia

Philippe III of Macedonia , or Philippe III Arrhidée (Ca 352 - 317) is, with Alexandre IV the last king Argéade of Macedonia.

Biography

Wire of Philippe II and the thessalienne Philinna, it is struck of a mental incapacity which very early draws aside it from the royal succession. For certain sources, it is a poison given by Olympias which would be responsible for this state. He is perhaps simply epileptic. With died of Philippe II, in 336, it thus does not have the appearance of a serious applicant vis-a-vis Alexandre which saves the life to him. It accompanies Alexandre in Asia, and it second in certain circumstances showing that it is not regarded less by it as a full member of the royal family.

With died of Alexandre in 323, he is proclaimed king, as well as the son in utero of Roxane (the future Alexandre IV of Macedonia) by the phalange Macedonian joined together in assembled with Babylon, and the Council is constrained to accept this decision all while placing it under the supervision of Perdiccas. It accompanies this last in a series by campaigns in 322.

In 321, he marries a grand-daughter of Philippe II, Eurydice, of his original name, Adea, the girl of Cynane and Amyntas (wire of Perdiccas III), born towards 336 and thus old only 15 years, in spite of the opposition of Perdiccas which orders with his/her Alcetas brother to kill Cynane. The army Macedonian, scandalized by this assassination of a girl of Philippe II, mutine and makes accept the marriage wanted by Cynane. It is probably the same assembly of weapons which re-elects Adea of the name of the mother of Philippe II, Eurydice. Eurydice seems to have called some at the assembly of the Macedonians to be regarded as the spokesperson of her husband, and thus representing it of the king, instead of Diadoques. She consequently plays, in spite of her youth, a big role in the civil war which shakes Macedonia.

In 317, Eurydice benefits from the absence of Polyperchon to the fight with Cassandre to get along with the party of this last, and to seize the power in Macedonia. She orders in the name of Philippe III in Polyperchon and Antigone One-eyed the to give their armies to Cassandre, to which the administration of the kingdom is entrusted.

Olympias, then in Épire with Alexandre IV, mobilizes an army and goes on Macedonia: it meets the forces of Philippe III and Eurydice with Euia, on the border between Macedonia and Thessalie. The prestige of the old Queen-mother and the memory of Alexandre carry it: the soldiers of Philippe III desert it, and it is made prisoner. Eurydice soon it is also stopped whereas it fled towards Amphipolis.

In September 317, Olympias makes assassinate Philippe III and constrained Eurydice with the suicide. She also makes carry out 100 their partisans, of which Nicanor, the brother of Cassandre.
