Philippe Herreweghe is a Leader Belgian, born on May 2nd, 1947 with Ghent.

Biography

In margin of its academic works (medicine and psychiatry), it follows also a musical formation to the academy where it studies the piano with Marcel Gazelle. During the same period, it starts a career of leader and in 1970 it creates the Collegium Vocale Race.

Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt noted from the start its approach exceptional of the music and invited Philippe Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale to be joined them for the recording of the integral of the cantatas of Bach.

Gradually, at the same time alive approach, authenticates and rhetoric of the Baroque music of Herreweghe was appreciated everywhere and in 1977 it created with Paris, on the initiative of Philippe Beaussant, the unit the Royal Vault which was devoted to the interpretation of the French music of the Century of Gold. Since, it still created several other units with which it knew to provide, individually or by associating them between them, a reading right and faithful of a musical repertory which goes from the Renaissance to the Modern music.

Thus we have the Vocal ensemble European, specialized in the polyphonic music of the Rebirth and the Orchestre of the Champs Elysées, created in 1991 in optics to give in value the romantic and preromantic repertory by using instruments of time.

Of 1982 at 2002, Philippe Herreweghe was artistic director of the festival of summer “the Musical Academies the Holy ones”; he is currently artistic director of the Center of meetings of the Abbaye to the Holy Ladies. Moreover, he is very often requested as leader of whole such as The Orchestra off the Age off Enlightenment, Concerto Köln, the Ensemble Music Obliques, the royal Orchestre of Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Philharmonic orchestra of Vienna and The Orchestra off St Lukes New York. In 1997 it was engaged as leader resident of the royal Philharmonic orchestra of Flanders.

It is consequently not astonishing that Philippe Herreweghe already obtained in many places of the distinctions than deserved more for his judicious artistic design and its indéfectible engagement towards the music. In 1990, the European musical press decreed to him the title of “musical Personality of the Year”. In 1993, Philippe Herreweghe and the Collegium Vocale Race were named “cultural Ambassador of Flanders”. One year later, he saw himself decreeing the order of Officier of Arts and Lettres and in 1997 Philippe Herreweghe was named Doctor Honoris Causa catholic Université of Leuwen.

Discography

Thanks to all these units, Philippe Herreweghe constituted with the passing of years a vast very diversified discography. The projecting points are inter alia the recordings of the vocal masterpieces of Bach (like the Passion according to Saint Matthieu and the Passion according to Saint Jean , the Messe in so minor and Oratorio of Christmas ), large the French motets of Rameau, Lully and Charpentier, the masses of requiem of Mozart, Fauré and Brahms, the oratorios of Mendelssohn Elias and Paulus , and the Lunar Pierrot of Schönberg. It started in 2004 the recording of the symphonies of Bruckner. Harmonia Mundi is its current recording company.
