Philippe Henriot

Philippe Henriot (Rheims, 1889 - Paris, June 28th 1944) is a politician French.

Member of organizations of Extreme right-hand side. He is resulting the catholic line; he taught in a Catholic school of the Gironde and his/her father had been, in Saint-Cyr military school, a school-fellow of the future Pétain marshal. In 1924, it meets the Bergey abbot, deputy of the Gironde, and takes part in the campaigns of the party of this one, the republican Popular union (UPR). Of 1925 with 1932, it engages in the catholic militancy of right-hand side at the sides of the general of Castelnau and the Bergey abbot. It gives conferences organized by the catholic National federation and publishes articles in the freedom of South-west. In 1932, it replaces the Bergey abbot like deputy of Bordeaux. Elected official vice-president of the republican Federation, it coordinates with the national plan Youths of Federation (JFR), created in 1935. Re-elected in 1936, it is appointed until in 1940

registered with the republican Federation, it is Anti-communiste, Antisémite, against the Francs-Maçons and unparliamentary. During the inter-war period, it is violently anti-hitlérien, before vigorously defending, in 1938, the agreements of Munich. In 1940, it adopts the marshal Pétain and supports the policy of the National Revolution in bodies like Gringoire and I am everywhere. He becomes very pro-German in June 1941, when the war between the Germany and the Russia starts. Its anticommunism is stronger than its anti-germanisme.

It is very active in the Collaboration, engages in the Milice. Under the occupation, it speaks the every day with the antenna of Radio Paris to defend collaboration, to attack the French free France and Free S of the Général de Gaulle. It takes part in a war of the waves which is held between the radios of the free France (Radio London,…) and radios of occupied France (Radio operator Paris,…). It fights particularly against Pierre Dac and Maurice Schumann. It is called the Goebbels French. One of its most faithful listeners would have been the marshal's wife Pétain. The invasion of the Free Zone in November 1942 did not prevent it from continuing its propaganda.

It had the reputation to be able to present the most complex subjects in a clear and direct way; it had much presence and its harmonious voice was never theatrical. Addressing itself to the apprehensive and apathetic mass, it gave the impression to him to be the voice of reason, able to correct the false informations that one transmitted to him since the foreigner; it thus managed to defend collaboration better than Pétain, too intellectual and traditionalist, or Laval, too limed in its sharp practices. To convince, he did not hesitate to go to Haute-Savoie for interviewing men of the maquis whom one there had captured and just presented them like stupid, malicious and filled of hatred. To believe the prefect of Vaucluse of it, this propaganda would have had effect: if two months earlier people had been massively side of Resistance, Henriot had succeeded in making them change opinion.

Under the pressure of the German troops of occupation it becomes, the January 6th 1944, Secretary of State of Information and of the propaganda of the Vichy government, at the same time as Darnand minister in charge for the maintenance of law and order is named. Laval is alone to sign their act of nomination, Pétain having refused to do it.

May 10th, 1944 Philippe Henriot on Radio-Paris is caught some to the French Jews taken refuge in London, for which, according to him, France would not count. Pierre Dac, on Radio-London will answer him: " My brother in France of course has his tomb the inscription “died for France”, whereas on that of Philippe Henriot one writes “dead for Hitler, shot by the French” ". This answer was premonitory: Henriot will be cut down by resistance 15 days later.

COMAC receives the order to remove or failing to carry out this speaker ultra collaborationnist. Charles Gonnard, known as Morlot is in charge of the mission. The June 28th 1944 with 5:30, it penetrates with the Ministry for information, 10 Rue of Solférino, accompanied by a group of resistant. Provided with false paper of militiaman, he convinces Philippe Henriot to open the door of his room to him. Vis-a-vis the armed men who present themselves, Henriot tries to be defended and is then cut down.

No evil was made with the woman of Henriot, which was in the part. His/her son, member of NSKK (militarized formation gathering the drivers Nazis), had set out again the day before for the face.

By measurement of reprisals, three members of the Milice carry out Georges Mandel. Other exactions take place in all France, in particular with Rillieux-the-Pope, close to Lyon, where the militiaman Paul Touvier makes carry out seven Jews to avenge death for Henriot.
