Philippe Chatrier
Philippe Chatrier (February 2nd 1928, June 22nd 2000) was a player of Tennis then a sporting leader French.
---- Young tennis player already champion of France juniors in 1945, Philippe Chartrier takes part in matches of Coupe Davis with the team of France between 1948 and 1950. He disputes his last Tournoi of Wimbledon in 1953, before turning to a career of journalist. He founds besides in this year 1953 the title of press Tennis of France (this same year his wife is also champion of France into simple).
Captain of the team of France of Coupe Davis in 1969, Chatrier takes a share essential in the unification in 1968 between the worlds amateurs and professionals which divided tennis hitherto, on a world level. Of 1968 with 1973, he is vice-president of the French federation of tennis. On this impetus, he becomes president of the French federation of Tennis in 1973, then president of the International federation of tennis in 1977. Under its impulse, tennis is popularized. The number of the French bachelors is multiplied by six in two decades, exceeding even the course of the million. It obtains the reintroduction of tennis to the Olympic program as of 1981 (sport of demonstration in 1984, then with the program since 1988). He becomes member of the International Olympic committee in 1988. He leaves his functions with the FIT in 1991 then with the FFT in 1993.
The May 25th 2001, the central court of the Stage of Roland-Garros, superbly rebuilt, is baptized Court Philippe Chatrier.
