Philippe Bottom 1794 - 1860. Archeologist and men of letters. Wire of Philippe-François-Joseph Bottom (1764 - 1794) and of Elisabeth Duplay (girl of Maurice Duplay landlord of Maximilien de Robespierre) street Saint-Honore with Paris. Philippe-François-Joseph Bottom was already deceased when Bottom was born Philippe.

Philippe Bottom made a military career, first of all in the navy, then in the imperial guard. In 1820, it was noticed by Hortense de Beauharnais which proposed to him to become the tutor of its son Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (future Napoleon III), this one accepted this function which it will fill until in 1827.

It went to the the Middle East to the head of an scientific exhibition, eminent archeologist it directed excavations in this area. In a work published in 1847, it told the various experiments which it lived at the time of this mission.

Of 1844 with 1860 it fulfills the functions of director of the Bibliothèque of the Sorbonne.

Opposed to the coup d'etat of the December 2nd 1851, it remained despite everything in good term with its old and illustrates pupil. He refused any favor of the emperor of the French.

Of 1838 with 1860, member of the Academy of the Inscriptions and the Humanities. In 1858, president of the Institute of France.
