Philipp Uffenbach , baptized on January 15th 1566 and † buried on April 6th 1636 with Frankfurt on the Hand is a painter, Illustrateur, Aquarelliste, engraver and German Cartographe in the mobility of Matthias Grünewald and Albrecht Dürer.
Life and work
Philipp Uffenbach, (at the origin Offenbach or Ofenbach ) is the son of a Tailleur named Heinrich Uffenbach. He becomes the apprentice of the painter originating in Mainz Adam Grimmer, auprès of which he receives an artistic formation. Grimmer is undoubtedly the son of Johann Grimmer, only pupil by name known of Matthias Grünewald. Perhaps this explains why Uffenbach had a chart decorated with drawings of the hand of Grünewald. However its work is especially marked by the influence of Grünewald and Dürer. In 1598, Philipp Uffenbach obtains the statute of middle-class of Frankfurt on the Hand, after being married and having begun again the workshop of his/her father-in-law. Painted work of Uffenbach it remains to us only some table X and engravings carried out according to its preparatory drawings, for example a Adoration of the magi of 1587, oil-base paint belonging to the Klassik Stiftung (traditional foundation) of Weimar. It is considered that its chief of work is a Ascension of 1599, qu ' it paints for a Couvent Bénédictin of Frankfurt. The fragments which survived find with the museum of the town of Frankfurt ( Historisches Museum ). One also knows that it carried out work of painting but also of decoration for the municipal council, for example the painted decoration of Cadran S. In this same vein one can quote the polychromy of the figures of the Liberté which decorates the tower of the old bridge of Frankfurt (1610) or of the Justice on the fountain of the place of the town hall (Römerberg). It also carries out the decoration of the ceiling of the big room of a castle for the Count of Hessen-Butzbach, Philippe III.Uffenbach is also interested in mechanics, the geometry and the anatomy, and, like many its contemporaries, with the experiments of Alchimie. It publishes one entitled book " Of circuli mechanici" will quadratura; .
Nothing proves, as that was said, than Uffenbach took part in the revolt of Fettmilch which ended in a Pogrom and the expulsion of the Jews of Frankfurt. The only bond between the two is a portrait of Vinzenz Fettmilch by Uffenbach with the museum of Frankfurt.
The primary reason which makes the fame of Uffenbach is to have been the Master of the German painter Adam Elsheimer (1578-1619)
