Biography
Born in 1918 in Indiana, Philip Jose Farmer, which live in Peoria, Illinois, is one of the last great writers American of the Golden age of the science fiction. With three prices HUGO ( Foreign Lovers -1953-, Riders of Gall or the Great Cramming -1968-, the River of Eternity -1972), he is recognized for his audacity, his wild imagination and his absence of literary taboos. He is, indeed, the first writer to have introduced the erotism into the science fiction, up to that point very prude, as of its first novel, the Foreign Lovers .
In fact, Farmer quickly revealed an innovative character in its way of treating the broad topics of the kind. In the years 1950-60, whereas the majority of the heroes of science fiction are good, sure they and values which they defend, the heroes farmeriens, while being athletic and heroic, are much less " purs" : they raise questions about the founded good their actions, appear curious to include/understand the operation of the exotic companies which they observe, initiate themselves with the language and the habits of the tribes that they meet… But especially, they are not free from defects, which confers a very particular charm to them. Often, they had access to a form of immortality, which, with the strange metabolisms, the erotism and the religion, constitutes one of the topics fetishes of Farmer, which return throughout its work.
It often appears itself in its own the same novels in the form of a character carrying initial ones as him (Peter Jairus Frigate, writer of science fiction, in the world of the river, Paul Janus Finnegan, originating in Indiana, alias Kickaha, in the saga of the God-men). It also revisits with irony and brilliance the existing literary myths, like that of Tarzan ( the naked jungle or the lord of the trees ).
