Philip Carteret ( Philippe de Carteret ) (manor of the Trinity, Jersey, 1733 - Southampton, 1796) was a navigator and exploring British. He carried out the round the world tour of 1766 with 1769.

He begins his career at 14 years in the marine with Plymouth (England); he works like servant in various forwardings.

After being promoted lieutenant in 1764, it made the first forwarding around the world on the Dolphin , ordered by John Byron. It made, of 1766 with 1769, left the forwarding ordered by the captain Samuel Wallis to discover new grounds in the southern hemisphere. In August 1766, it leaves Plymouth on board the Swallow , an old vessel in very bad state, accompanied by the ship by supply the Prince Frederic ordered by Jacques Brine, and by the Dolphin ordered by Samuel Wallis. It has the role of exploring the unknown areas located between the Cape Horn and the New Zealand, in order to develop navigation and the trade in this area. The Dolphin separates from the Swallow on the level of the Magellan Strait during a storm. Separately, the two vessels continue their forwarding and turn over in England while crossing the Pacific.
S' follows then of many discoveries:
- on May 12th, 1767, he sees the island of Masafuero, more known under the name of Easter Island.
- the July 2nd 1767, a member of its crew, Robert Pitcairn, fifteen years old, sees an island. The Swallow cannot accost there because of the violence of the floods. The island Pitcairn was discovered; it will remain famous for the events of the " Bounty".
- the islands of the Company (island of the bishop of Osnabrugh, island of King George, Gloucester island), but Carteret thinks that it is about island discovered before by the Quiros navigator. In fact, they were discovered a few months before by Wallis.
- on August 12th, it reaches the islands of the Queen-Charlotte.
- on August 17th, these are the islands Santa Cruz gold Lord Egment, including one small archipelago named the Swallow islands. It carries out a more complete study and discovered the islands Portland, Trevanion, Keppel, Oury and Lord How or New Gersey then on August 20th the island Gower (name of its first lieutenant).
- on August 21st it reaches the the Solomon Islands, that it redécouvre partly after Mendana de Neira in 1528. There, he baptizes the Carteret island (by 159° 14 ' length. E., 8° 26 ' lat. S.) today Malaita island, then the Simpson island today the Manoaba.
island It continues its race along the New Ireland (in the north of the New Guinea), islands Mapia, and the islands of Admiralty. It reaches Batavia in June 1768 and sets out again for the England in September. At the time of its return, it meets the forwarding of Bougainville off the coasts of Africa. It will arrive at good port in March 1769.

It will be named ordering with the the British Indies of 1777 to 1781, then vice-admiral and member of admiralty in 1794.

Was the relation of its voyage published with those of the first voyage of James Cook and Samuel Wallis by John Hawkesworth (1715? - 1773), and translated into French by Jean Baptist Antoine Suard (1732-1817).
