Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France
the Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France is, with the National orchestra of France, the Chœur from Radio France and the Maîtrise from Radio France, one of four continuing educations of Radio France.
It is composed of 138 musicians, and with the characteristic to be a very flexible formation: manpower can be divided into two or three in order to adapt to the played repertory.
It is directed by Myung-Whun Chung since 2000.
History of the names of the orchestra and its various branches
- 1937 : Birth of the radio-symphonic Orchestra
- 1941: Creation of the radio-lyric Orchestra and the String quartet of French broadcasting
- 1952: Creation of the Chamber orchestra of French broadcasting
- 1960: The radio-symphonic Orchestra becomes the Philharmonic orchestra of French broadcasting
- 1964: this orchestra becomes the Philharmonic orchestra of ORTF
- 1975: Radio France succeeds the ORTF
- 1976: this orchestra becomes the New Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France . It gathers the radio-lyric Orchestra, the Chamber orchestra and the Philharmonic orchestra of the ORTF.
- 1989 : this orchestra becomes the Philharmonic orchestra of Radio France , and keeps this denomination.
